First female station commander appointed at Umkomaas SAPS
Her extensive experience within the South African Police Service has equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary to execute her duties effectively.
Colonel Samkelisiwe Mncwango has been appointed as the new station commander for Umkomaas SAPS, marking a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this position.
Col Mncwango previously served as the station commander at Mahlabathini SAPS, where she gained recognition for her outstanding leadership.
Col Mncwango is a dedicated public servant and leader, guided by principles of integrity and resilience, and has completed numerous senior management courses in Paarl, Cape Town, including a station management programme.
Her extensive experience within the South African Police Service has equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary to execute her duties effectively.
In a recent interview, Col Mncwango stated, “I am a disciplined commissioned officer. My leadership approach is principled and people-centred, aimed at achieving the targets outlined in the Station Operational Plan. As we navigate our responsibilities, we must strive to defend our title as the best. My resilience is rooted in our humanity – we must yield but not break.”

Col Mncwango expressed her gratitude towards the previous acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel MD Zungu, for his diligent service. She also acknowledged the detective commander, support commander, organised labour, officers, and all ranks for their hard work and for maintaining the station’s high standards.
As an innovative leader, Col Mncwango values excellent service delivery and fosters an open-door policy for both community members and her officers.
She has engaged with various stakeholders in the precinct, including Mrs Gumede, chairperson of the Umkomaas Community Police Forum, to enhance partnership policing collaboratively.
“My elevation to this key leadership position is a significant achievement,” concluded Col Mncwango.
