Community partnership tackles dangerous Whetstone Drive traffic woes
The situation has been worsened by motorists driving onto the curb and travelling against the flow of traffic in an attempt to bypass queues and merge ahead of other vehicles.
A collaborative effort between RAW Neighbourhood Watch, Building Better Communities (BBC) and weFEEDsa is set to bring much-needed relief to residents and motorists affected by ongoing traffic and safety concerns at the entrance to Whetstone Drive, off Lenham Drive.
For several years, residents have raised concerns about increasing traffic congestion in the area, particularly during peak hours.
The situation has been worsened by motorists driving onto the curb and travelling against the flow of traffic in an attempt to bypass queues and merge ahead of other vehicles.
This dangerous behaviour has not only disrupted the normal flow of traffic but has also placed pedestrians and motorists at significant risk.
According to community members, the problem has steadily worsened over time, creating daily frustrations for residents, commuters, and businesses operating in the vicinity.
Pedestrians, including schoolchildren, elderly residents, and individuals who use the area daily, have been forced to navigate unsafe conditions as vehicles mount pavements and disregard traffic regulations.
Recognising the seriousness of the issue, the organisations joined forces to find a practical solution. The organisations engaged with local stakeholders and municipal departments, working closely with ward councillor, Samier Singh, to address the growing safety concerns.
Previously, bollards were installed on one side of the roadway through the efforts of Cllr Singh. While this intervention proved effective in improving safety and preventing illegal driving behaviour in certain sections, budget constraints prevented the relevant departments from extending the project further.
As complaints from residents continued to increase and the risks became more severe, RAW and BBC intensified their efforts to secure a long-term solution.
Meetings were held with key stakeholder departments to discuss possible interventions and identify ways in which the community could assist in overcoming financial limitations.
A breakthrough came through the support of a RAW interim committee member, who assisted in sourcing and securing the necessary materials and additional bollards required for the project.

This contribution enabled the community organisations to move forward with the initiative despite the budgetary challenges faced by the relevant departments. weFEEDsa also played a pivotal role with local labour and skilled teams to install the bollards.
The installation of the additional bollards is expected to significantly improve traffic management at the entrance to Whetstone Drive.
By preventing motorists from driving on the curb and cutting into traffic, the project aims to restore order to the roadway, reduce congestion, and create a safer environment for all road users.
Community leaders believe the project serves as an example of what can be achieved when residents, community organisations, elected representatives, and government departments work together towards a common goal.
The initiative highlights the importance of community-driven solutions in addressing local challenges and demonstrates how partnerships can deliver meaningful results even with limited resources.
RAW Neighbourhood Watch and BBC have expressed their gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the project, including the ward councillor, municipal departments, volunteers, and community members who supported the initiative from its inception.
“This project is about more than just traffic management. It is about protecting lives, improving road safety, and ensuring that our community remains a safe place for residents, pedestrians, and motorists alike. Through cooperation and determination, we have shown that positive change is possible,” explained a representative from RAW.
Residents have welcomed the intervention and expressed hope that it will significantly reduce the dangerous driving practices that have affected the area for years.
The partnership between RAW Neighbourhood Watch, BBC, and weFEEDsa stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and a shared commitment to building safer, stronger, and better communities for all.
