About Rising Sun Newspapers
About Rising Sun Newspapers
When the founder and CEO of the Rising Sun Community Newspapers, Vijay Maharaj, decided to launch a newspaper in 1986, he did so with the intention of providing communities with free access to news and advertisements. Three and a half decades later this influential newspaper has become more than just a source of news and advertising. It serves as the mirror and voice of communities and is a trusted advertising platform for businesses.
While the brand is now a household name and an operation that holds great success, the history of the Rising Sun is built on humble beginnings along with countless hours of hard work, sacrifice and perseverance. The journey began when Maharaj identified a dire need for a free newspaper. Through his resilience and passion to help communities, he launched his first paper with a print order of just 6, 000 copies. With limited resources, he used his father’s bakkie and with the help of three casual workers, he walked the streets of Tongaat to deliver the first edition of the Rising Sun Newspaper. This marked the beginning of the Rising Sun’s remarkable journey.
Today, this formidable brand owns publications that cover the length and breadth of KwaZulu-Natal, and parts of Johannesburg, and has a readership of more than 1, 2 million on a weekly basis. The Rising Sun also holds the title of being the number one community newspaper with the highest readership in five out of the six areas that were included in the robust ROOTS survey. This achievement also placed the Rising Sun well ahead of a large number of local and mainstream newspapers which also featured in the survey.
With strong leadership and a dedicated and skilled staff contingent, The Rising Sun continues to outshine the rest.
