63 drunk drivers arrested as Metro Police steps up road safety enforcement

Metro Police have confirmed the arrest of 63 motorists for drinking and driving during a series of joint citywide roadblocks.

Providing a breakdown of the operations, Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu said the enforcement operations yielded significant results in multiple locations.

During the initial operation on Higginson Highway in Chatsworth, officers arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a separate operation along Blair Atholl Drive in Westville, an additional 13 motorists were apprehended for the same offence.

A subsequent crackdown on Higginson Highway in Chatsworth resulted in the arrest of another 25 drivers for drunk driving.

“We are intensifying our efforts, ensuring that people continue to adhere to the city’s by-laws, and escalating our commitment to the Batho Pele principles of putting people first. The city wants to ensure that people are safe, and their well-being continues to be our priority,” said Col Zungu.

More arrests were made in various other operations. Metro Police have reiterated their call for all residents to comply with city by-laws and strictly refrain from drinking and driving.

Metro Police commissioner, Sbonelo Mchunu, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement teams.

“I am happy with our teams and the continuous relationship we have with our stakeholders. I would like to encourage these engagements, participations, and support from everyone involved,” Commissioner Mchunu said.
