Provincial crime operation leads to hundreds of arrests across Johannesburg

The operation formed part of ongoing Provincial #OperationShanela2 initiatives conducted across all five policing districts to combat crime, enforce immigration laws and enhance public safety.

Gauteng police arrested more than 250 illegal immigrants during a multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela II conducted in the Hillbrow and Johannesburg Central policing precincts recently.

The operation formed part of ongoing Provincial #OperationShanela2 initiatives conducted across all five policing districts to combat crime, enforce immigration laws and enhance public safety.

Gauteng’s provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, led the high-density operation in the Hillbrow and Johannesburg Central policing precincts. During the operation, more than 250 illegal immigrants were arrested, while 13 suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs. One suspect was arrested for attempted murder, and one suspect was arrested for rape. Traffic officers also issued fines amounting to R100, 000 for various traffic violations.

The provincial detectives arrested wanted suspects, with 169 arrests relating to crimes against women and children overnight.

“The operation was conducted to strengthen efforts aimed at addressing illegal immigration and other criminal activities across the province, complementing ongoing law enforcement interventions,” said Lt Gen Mthombeni.

The operation included members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Community Policing Forums, and private security companies.
