A murder case was subsequently opened at Sydenham SAPS and assigned to Detective Sergeant Lungisani Kweyama.

According to Sydenham SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Simo Jili, Det Sgt Kweyama’s investigation led to information that the suspect had fled to Pietermaritzburg and was planning to relocate to Gauteng.

“Det Sgt Kweyama immediately followed up on the information, travelled to Pietermaritzburg and successfully arrested the suspect before she could leave the province. Following a thorough investigation, she was charged and later sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment,” said Sgt Jili.

He praised the detective’s dedication, describing the conviction as a reflection of the meticulous investigative work carried out by Sydenham SAPS detectives.

In another recent success, members of the Sydenham Crime Prevention Unit recovered an unlicensed firearm during an intelligence-driven operation on June 30.

Constables, Lungisani Masuku and Mlungisi Khanyile acted on information about a man allegedly carrying an illegal firearm.

They located the suspect, searched him and recovered a 9mm pistol with live ammunition.

The firearm’s serial number had been filed off. Sgt Jili said the arrest marked the 10th illegal firearm recovered by the two officers since January this year.
