Police operations sweep through Johannesburg district
“We will intensify these operations to ensure that our communities are and feel safe,” confirmed the Johannesburg district commissioner, Maj Gen Nonhlanhla Kubheka.
During operations conducted throughout the Johannesburg district from May 16 to 18, 2025, police officers from several stations detained over 470 suspects for a variety of offences. These operations include Operation Shanela, visible policing/ station commander operations, high-density operations, and adhock roadblocks.
The police apprehended about 52 suspects for various crimes ranging from selling liquor without license, undocumented persons, and driving under the influence of liquor. This was during a multi-disciplinary provincial Operation Shanela, which was held around Diepsloot policing precinct.

The operation was led by the Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Tommy Mthombeni joined by other law enforcement agencies that included Department of Home affairs, JMPD, Siyabangena patrollers, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and CPF.
During the visible policing and station commander’s operations, which were carried out by several stations throughout the district, an additional 123 suspects were arrested for a variety of offences.
The stations also held high density operations where an additional 30 suspects were also arrested by different stations across the district. During the operation which was held in Meadowlands, an intelligence0driven operation led to the arrest of a suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm with its serial numbers filed off and live ammunition. The police also arrested a suspect at Dobsonville for discharging a firearm in a municipal area while under the influence of alcohol.

In Florida and Moroka, police arrested two suspects for dealing in drugs that included mandrax and dagga.
The police also arrested about 14 undocumented persons during the adhock roadblock, which was held along Grasmere Toll Plaza and N14 freeway in Diepsloot. The other 28 suspects were also arrested across the district for driving under the influence of liquor.
The suspects will appear in various courts soon.
