A truck driver died in a horrific collision between a heavy-tonnage truck and a minibus taxi on the N12 West, just after the Comaro Road off-ramp in the Bassonia/ Gleneagles area, on Thursday, July 2.

The minibus taxi driver escaped uninjured, and no other injuries were reported. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said preliminary investigations indicate that the truck’s heavy load shifted forward during impact, crushing the cab and fatally injuring the driver, who was declared dead at the scene.
The incident triggered severe congestion as emergency services and specialised recovery teams worked to remove the truck’s load and recover the damaged vehicle.
JMPD officers remained at the scene directing traffic, with long delays expected for several hours as recovery efforts continued. Westbound motorists were urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes to minimise delays.

“Three lanes are currently closed, with only one lane operational. Emergency services and specialised recovery teams are actively working to clear the heavy load from the roadway and recover the truck cabin,” said Superintendent Fihla.
He advised motorists to divert before the Comaro Road off-ramp using the R59, South Rand Road, Verona Street, and Rifle Range Road. JMPD also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased driver as investigations into the cause of the fatal crash continue.
