Not guilty of good taste: How bad fashion convicted robbers

Two armed robbers, who terrorised a business in Park Rynie in July 2023, have been sentenced to 12 years of direct imprisonment, largely thanks to one suspect’s unforgettable choice of a purple camouflage jacket.
The Scottburgh Magistrates Court handed down the sentence on Wednesday, August 7, to Mzukisi Sikweletsi, 20, and Fano Ngqangqa, 35, bringing closure to a case that began with a brazen daylight robbery. The incident unfolded on July 8, 2023, at a business in the Industrial Park of Park Rynie.

The duo, both brandishing firearms, entered the premises, tied up their victims, and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and several cellphones.
While one man wore generic dark clothing, his accomplice, Ngqangqa, made a critical error.
He was clad in a highly distinctive red beanie and a bright purple camouflage jacket – an unusual garment that seared his image into the memory of the victims.
“This specific item of clothing became a crucial piece of evidence. It’s not something you see every day,” said a source close to the investigation.
The case was assigned to Cnst Werner Botha of the Scottburgh Detective Service.
Leveraging the unique description, investigators tracked down and arrested the pair three months later, in October 2023.

After nearly two years of court appearances, both accused were convicted on charges of business robbery. In addition to their 12-year prison terms, the magistrate declared Sikweletsi and Ngqangqa unfit to ever possess a firearm.
