Mentally ill son hacks mother to death
A witness to the incident was interviewed by police and stated that the victim was from Bonela, who brought her mentally ill son for traditional healing.
The gruesome discovery of a 64-year-old woman lying in a pool of blood, by police, allegedly killed by her mentally ill son, sent shockwaves through the community of Mount Moriah, on Friday night, after it was gathered that the victim was hacked to death.
Phoenix SAPS spokesperson, Cpt Louise Naidoo, said, “On Friday, last week, Sgt Mkhize received a complaint of murder. Upon his arrival at the scene, he was met with the victim lying in a pool of blood. She was assaulted with a machete (bush knife) and sustained serious head injuries with brain matter splashed on the floor. The murder weapon was found next to the body. Paramedics were called to the scene and the victim was declared dead.”

Cpt Naidoo continued, “The son was discharged from Fort Napier Hospital to undergo traditional healing. The property used by the victim and her son belonged to the traditional healer. It is believed they were asleep in the room. When the victim got up, she noticed that her son was missing. She called the witness and informed her. They then went in search of the son but to no avail. The victim and the witness returned to the property and sat on the porch. The son returned and an argument ensued. The suspect then allegedly approached his mother and punched her in the face. The witness intervened but she was kicked in the stomach. The victim asked the witness to call the neighbours. When they returned, they saw the victim being assaulted with the machete by the suspect. The suspect then left the machete on the floor and left. The witness then alerted relatives and the police.”

The suspect was seated on the road, not far from the scene of the murder, and was apprehended by police officers, who placed him under arrest.
The suspect was covered in blood.
