Morningside mum allegedly stabbed to death by fiancé

A harrowing scene unfolded in Morningside last Friday when a woman was allegedly repeatedly stabbed to death in full view of her children and passers-by during a suspected domestic dispute.

The 32-year-old woman, Dima Phohlo Mofokeng, lost her life in an act of violence allegedly inflicted by her 42-year-old fiancé on Earl Haig Road.

Eyewitness testimonies allege that the victim attempted to flee from her partner and ran into a car that was passing. The suspect allegedly caught up with her after she fell and stabbed her again.

This all while the couple’s children looked on at the gruesome attack in horror before they fled to their neighbour’s house for safety.

As news of the incident spread, the community reacted with shock and anger at the brutal and heinous nature of Mofokeng’s death.

According to security company, PT Alarms, the suspect in the murder has been taken into custody by police pending further investigation.

“The PT Alarms Durban Ambassador responded to the scene where the female was found with multiple stab wounds. The suspect was apprehended by the community and security companies and he is now in custody at Mayville SAPS,” read a statement by the security company.

Women For Change, a non-profit organisation that educates, advocates, and campaigns on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), human rights, and gender equality reacted to the passing of the mother of two via their Facebook page.

“It is alleged that the couple had an argument, which allegedly resulted in the suspect stabbing Dima multiple times. Her lifeless body was found lying on the road. The suspect was arrested. Dima leaves behind her two children. Our hearts are broken. Fly high, sister.”

The organisation engages the general public through its social media pages, which currently reach up to 10 million people per month and influence policymakers and public opinion.

The tragic loss of Mofokeng underscores the importance of addressing the scourge of domestic violence which has reached near endemic levels in South Africa.
