Mandela Day kindness reaches Lawley Station’s elderly
The initiative was aimed at honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy by bringing hope, dignity and relief to senior citizens who face daily socio-economic challenges.
In the spirit of Mandela Day, the Lenasia Rising Sun, in partnership with Gift of the Givers, extended a helping hand to some of the most vulnerable members of the Lawley Station informal settlement through the donation of food hampers and cosmetic care packs.
The early Mandela Day outreach saw 20 elderly residents, aged between 70 and 80, receive much-needed essentials.
The initiative was aimed at honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy by bringing hope, dignity and relief to senior citizens who face daily socio-economic challenges.
Lawley Station was selected because it is one of the area’s informal settlements, where many residents live in difficult conditions with limited resources.

Elderly people in the community are among the most vulnerable, often relying on social grants while facing the rising cost of food and other necessities.
The initiative sought to ease some of that burden, while reminding residents that they have not been forgotten.
Chairperson of the residents’ committee in Lawley Station, Prem Sookmungal, expressed his gratitude. “On behalf of the community, I would like to say thank you so much, especially for this special occasion of Mandela Day which is close to so many of our hearts. Continue doing good and let’s spread the message. Let every day be a Mandela Day,” he said.
The outreach served as a reminder that Mandela Day is about more than just 67 minutes of service.
It is about inspiring a culture of compassion, generosity and community upliftment throughout the year, ensuring that even the smallest acts of kindness leave a lasting impact.
