Calling all pupils: Experience a taste of heritage
The message to the youth is clear - come hungry for heritage!
Cuisine, culture and historical reflections will come together this winter school holidays at the 1860 Heritage Centre in Durban.
The centre, an agency museum of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, is hosting ‘A Day at the Museum’ for children aged eight to 18 on Tuesday, July 7, from 11am to 2pm. Entry is free.
Director at the centre, Selvan Naidoo, says, “The activities will begin with a tour of the centre to help young people understand our shared past and appreciate the sacrifices that paved the way for our democracy. The tour includes exhibitions on Indenture, Curries Fountain, the Role of Women in the Struggle and the Mandela, Gandhi and Luthuli Rooms.”

This will be followed by a cooking demonstration on preparing roti – traditional flatbread – and bhaji – sugarcane herbs.
Naidoo explains, “Bhaji and roti were part of the staple diet of Indian indentured labourers – a simple yet nutritious meal that has sustained our people for generations. We want our youth to remember the love these traditional dishes were cooked with during the hardships of indenture and why they are still enjoyed today.”
Parents are welcome to drop off their children or may accompany them. While there are no costs, RSVP is essential for catering purposes. Contact Yatin on 072-331-4017 for more information.
