Thousands unite at Durban Amphitheatre for International Yoga Day celebrations

The event saw an estimated 3, 000 participants moving in unison as they embraced the ancient practice.

Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, spiritual leaders, government representatives, schoolchildren and community members from diverse backgrounds gathered at the Durban Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 21, to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga, hosted by the Sivananda World Peace Foundation.

Held under the theme, ‘Yoga for Anti-Aging’, the event promoted physical health, mental well-being and social cohesion while highlighting yoga’s ability to bridge cultural and social divides.

The celebrations were attended by His Majesty, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, the premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thamsanqa Ntuli, the Consul General of India in Durban, Mr Niteen Subhash Yeola, spiritual leaders from various faiths, yoga federations, and wellness groups. Their presence underscored the growing recognition of yoga as a tool for wellness, unity and community development.

Ishwar Ramlutchman, president of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation and chief organiser of the event, paid tribute to Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, whose efforts led to the United Nations declaring June 21 as International Day of Yoga.

“As we assemble here today, we gather as a global community to honour this 5,000-year-old tradition and a global movement for peace, health and unity. This day is a celebration of India’s ancient gift to the world – yoga, a practice that transforms lives across continents,” said Ramlutchman.

In his keynote address, King Misuzulu described yoga as a timeless and transformative practice that nurtures emotional, physical and mental well-being, while encouraging individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles.

Organisers said the annual event continues to grow in popularity, bringing together people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds in a shared commitment to health, mindfulness and unity.
