Umdoni libraries inspire a love of reading across Ugu district

The Umdoni libraries’ reading competitions have successfully concluded their first rounds, leaving a trail of inspiration and excitement among young readers.
The competitions were hosted at various libraries across the district. These included Malangeni, Umzinto, Scottburgh, and Vulamehlo.
The reading competitions were specifically designed for grade four pupils and formed part of an ongoing effort by public libraries to promote literacy and cultivate a lifelong love of reading among youth.
Through these competitions, pupils were given an opportunity to showcase their reading abilities, build confidence, and develop a deeper appreciation for books and learning.
This initiative comes at a crucial time, as recent government research has highlighted concerns that many grade four pupils struggle to read without understanding.

After a series of competitive rounds held across the participating libraries, 12 pupils emerged as winners. These young reading champs have now advanced to the next stage of the competition, where they will continue their literacy journey and represent their respective communities.
As they move forward to the next level of the competition, libraries, teachers, parents, and community members remain hopeful that these youngsters will inspire their peers to discuss the joy and power of reading.
