Wellness centre opens new chapter of care for Sydenham’s elderly
The centre aims to provide a space focused on health, wellness, social interaction and support services for senior citizens.
A new wellness centre dedicated to supporting elderly residents from three old age homes in the Sydenham area was officially opened recently, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing renewal and development of the facilities.
The three Homes Wellness Centre for the Elderly was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by residents, board members, community stakeholders and local leaders.
The centre aims to provide a space focused on health, wellness, social interaction and support services for senior citizens.
Ward 31 councillor, Remona McKenzie, described the facility as ‘more than just a building’ and said it represents ‘a promise of care, dignity and community’ for the elderly.
“Our elders are the foundation of ward 31. Their wisdom, resilience and sacrifices have shaped the path we walk today. This centre is dedicated to ensuring that they continue to live with joy, respect and the support they deserve,” she said.
The opening follows a period of significant transformation at the three homes. According to McKenzie, the facilities were previously found to be in poor structural condition, with governance challenges placing residents and the future of the homes at risk.

Acting on guidance from the Department of Social Development, a special annual general meeting was convened to restore governance and establish a new board.
Following a difficult transition period, the new leadership took over and worked alongside various stakeholders to stabilise the institution.
Cllr McKenzie said the homes are now properly registered, governance structures have been implemented, and upgrades have been carried out to improve the living conditions and safety of residents.
“The opening of the wellness centre marks a new chapter – one of dignity, care and structured management for the benefit of our senior citizens,” she said.
She added that the organisation is awaiting documentation for the renewal of its lease agreement, which will provide long-term security for residents and ensure the continued sustainability of the homes.
Cllr McKenzie credited the achievement to collaboration, honesty, unity, love and teamwork among all stakeholders involved.
