Winter warmth drive brings comfort and hope across KZN and Gauteng
Through generous public donations, crowdfunding efforts, and support from SMEs, the initiative raised approximately R117, 142 towards the drive.
As winter temperatures continue to drop across South Africa, communities are once again coming together to ensure that warmth reaches those who need it most.
Sewa International South Africa’s annual winter warmth blanket drive recently brought together volunteers, donors, families, and supporters in a collective effort to spread comfort, kindness, and hope this winter season.
On Sunday, May 24, over 80 dedicated volunteers gathered in Umhlanga Ridge for a day filled with service and community spirit.
Beginning with an auspicious prayer, the drive saw volunteers enthusiastically sorting, packing, lifting, and loading blankets that would later reach vulnerable communities across KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
This year’s campaign became the organisation’s most impactful winter warmth initiative drive yet, with 1, 810 blankets distributed to children’s homes, old-age homes, animal shelters, homeless individuals, and struggling families facing severe winter conditions.
Through generous public donations, crowdfunding efforts, and support from SMEs, the initiative raised approximately R117, 142 towards the drive.
The atmosphere during the distribution process was filled with energy, laughter, and purpose. Volunteers carefully separated adult, children, and pet blankets according to the needs of different organisations and communities.

Collectively, volunteers contributed over 384 volunteer hours towards sorting, packing, co-ordinating, and distributing warmth to those in need.
The day concluded with a joyful bring-and-share lunch, celebrating the spirit of togetherness and service.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this year’s winter warmth drive was the enthusiastic participation of children and young volunteers, many of whom spent the day helping with sorting and packing blankets.
Beyond the activity itself, the experience became a meaningful lesson in compassion, kindness, and community service.
Through these small yet powerful acts, children learnt the importance of giving back to society and being caring and considerate towards all living beings, whether people facing hardship or animals in shelters.
Over the years, this initiative has grown into much more than a seasonal blanket campaign. It has become a symbol of compassion, volunteerism, and collective community action, reminding people that even small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.
As the winter season continues, the warmth shared through this initiative will continue reaching homes, shelters, care centres, and communities across the country, carrying with it comfort, dignity, and hope.
