Stolen firearm recovered as Umkomaas police act on intelligence
The recovery of illegal firearms remains a priority for the South African Police Service, as every firearm removed from the hands of criminals contributes significantly to saving lives and reducing violent crime.
The eThekwini district commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, and the management of eThekwini District SAPS have commended officers attached to Umkomaas SAPS Crime Prevention Relief B for their swift response and excellent police work, which resulted in the recovery of a robbed firearm and the arrest of a suspect found in possession of the weapon.
On Monday, June 8, at approximately 10pm, officers acted on information regarding a firearm that had previously been robbed from its lawful owner within the Umkomaas policing precinct.
Acting promptly on the intelligence received, police proceeded to Danganya, where they located the identified suspect.
During a search of the suspect, officers recovered a black Glock pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition.

Although most of the serial numbers on the firearm had been deliberately filed off, the police officers conducted a meticulous inspection and managed to identify a remaining serial number.
Further investigation confirmed that the firearm was linked to an Umkomaas case. The suspect was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
He was subsequently detained at Umkomaas SAPS and is expected to appear before court soon. The recovered firearm and ammunition were processed and secured in accordance with forensic procedures.
