Umkomaas detective sergeant distinguishes himself with national leadership honour
The detective successfully completed the comprehensive Resolving of Crime Course, a demanding curriculum encompassing 20 modules designed to hone the skills of the service’s top investigative minds.
Det Sgt Prishan Maharaj of the Umkomaas SAPS has been recognised on a national stage for his exceptional leadership and dedication, bringing pride to his station and community.
Det Sgt Maharaj was recently honoured with the prestigious Emerging Leadership Certificate during a ceremony at the SAPS Detective Academy in Pretoria. The award was presented by Gen Chauke, representing human resource development, and Col Sethlako, the academy commander, who both commended Maharaj for his exemplary leadership capabilities displayed throughout a rigorous training programme.

Umkomaas SAPS communications officer, Cpt Ranjith Rampersad, provided context to this achievement, highlighting that Det Sgt Maharaj is no ordinary recruit.

With over two decades of policing expertise, a university degree, and an array of specialised courses and commendations to his name, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the detective services.
“Maharaj is a person of remarkable eloquence, humility, integrity, and above all, tenacity. Though a recent addition to our detective branch, he serves with unwavering dedication. He excels in all facets of policing and is relentless in his pursuit of justice, ensuring that offenders face the full might of the law. He confronts criminality daily and has already made significant contributions to law enforcement in the Umkomaas precinct,” Cpt Rampersad said.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, a humble yet proud Sgt Maharaj shared his philosophy.
“I take great pride in sharing my expertise with others. My journey has been characterised by growth, grace, and resilience. This is a testament to the power of continuous education. I extend my sincere gratitude to the management and my detective commander for the opportunity to partake in this course. May today’s success herald the dawn of tomorrow’s achievements,” he said.
The acting station commander of Umkomaas SAPS, Lt Col John Ngema, added his praise, lauding Det Sgt Maharaj for his successful completion of the course and wishing him continued success in his vital role as a professional investigating officer.
