‘Dear Gov’ launch shines spotlight on the struggles facing South African families

Through a series of letters and real-life stories, Nyakane highlights the lived experiences of citizens whose struggles often go unheard.

What began as a personal writing project during the uncertainty of 2020 has grown into a powerful call for change. On Saturday, June 6, Lenasia South author, Nomfundo Nyakane launched her debut book, Dear Gov: Letters from a Nation Raising Its Children, at an event attended by her supporters.

The 424-page book, which was officially published on March 31, 2026, tackles some of South Africa’s most pressing social challenges.

Nyakane first began writing the book in 2020 but paused the project before returning to it earlier this year. After restructuring and refining much of the content, she completed the manuscript and brought her vision to life.

Dear Gov is divided into six sections and concludes with an epilogue. The book addresses a range of issues affecting ordinary South Africans, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, crime, and the justice system. Through a series of letters and real-life stories, Nyakane highlights the lived experiences of citizens whose struggles often go unheard.

Part One, titled Fifteen Letters to Power, is followed by sections on Education Under Siege, From Classroom to Crossroads, Healthcare – When the System Fails, Infrastructure Collapse, and Crime and the Judiciary.

The book is addressed to decision-makers and those in positions of authority, urging them to listen to the voices of the people and take meaningful action.

At the heart of the project is Nyakane’s four-year-old granddaughter, Amani Nyakane, to whom the book is dedicated. “Her laughter, curiosity, and light remind me why these stories must be told,” said Nyakane.

She explained that the book was inspired by a desire to raise awareness of the challenges faced by many South Africans and to encourage change for future generations.

“The issues raised in this book affect all of us. It is about creating a better future for our children and grandchildren,” she said.

Beyond its message, the project also aims to make a practical difference. A percentage of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to Vhuyisa R’eve Cooperative, an organisation focused on empowering women and girls through leadership development, educational support, personal growth programmes and sustainable empowerment initiatives.

The cooperative is also committed to supporting people living with disabilities, a cause that resonated deeply with Nyakane and the Dear Gov Project team.

Through Dear Gov, Nyakane hopes not only to spark conversations about the country’s social challenges but also to inspire collective action toward a more just and caring society.

For Nyakane, the book is more than a collection of stories and letters – it is a message of hope, accountability, and a reminder that the future being shaped today belongs to the next generation.
