Whetstone Primary pupil to represent South Africa in international peace poster competition

This year's theme, ‘Together as One’, challenged participants to creatively explore concepts such as unity, compassion, hope, and global harmony.

Whetstone Primary School is celebrating a remarkable achievement after pupil, Khushi Ashley Moonilal, was crowned the national winner of the 2025/2026 Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Competition, earning the opportunity to represent South Africa at the prestigious international level.

The Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Competition, which is open to pupils between the ages of 11 and 13, encourages young people to express their vision of peace through art.

This year’s theme, ‘Together as One’, challenged participants to creatively explore concepts such as unity, compassion, hope, and global harmony.

Khushi’s outstanding artwork impressed judges with its powerful message and exceptional artistic quality, securing first place at both district and national levels.

Her achievement is particularly significant given the scale of the competition, which attracts entries from more than 200 countries worldwide and includes participation from over 100 Lions Clubs across South Africa and Eswatini.

Speaking on the achievement, East Coast Lions Club president, Gopika Dass, praised Khushi’s accomplishment and highlighted the importance of the competition in empowering young people to become ambassadors for peace and positive change.

“The Peace Poster Competition provides pupils with an opportunity to use their creativity to promote understanding, respect, and unity within their communities and across the world,” said Dass.

She also expressed gratitude to Whetstone Primary teacher, Mrs L Govender, for encouraging and guiding Khushi throughout the competition journey.

Khushi’s success has brought immense pride to Whetstone Primary School, the Phoenix community, and South Africa. As the national champion, she will now advance to the international stage, where her artwork will compete alongside entries from some of the world’s most talented young artists.

During a special celebration held in her honour, Whetstone Primary principal, Mrs V Pillay, commended Khushi for her dedication, creativity, and perseverance.

“Khushi has demonstrated exceptional passion and determination. Her artwork carries a message of peace that connects hearts without the need for words,” said Pillay.

In recognition of her achievement, both Khushi and the school received prize money at district and national levels, art materials, and a certificate of excellence.

Beyond the awards, Khushi’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration to pupils across the country, demonstrating how creativity and hard work can create opportunities on a global stage.

As Whetstone Primary celebrates this extraordinary milestone, the school community has rallied behind Khushi as she prepares to represent South Africa internationally.

Her achievement stands as a shining example of how young voices can inspire peace, unity, and positive change in an increasingly interconnected world.
