Manhunt for suspects after Lenasia South ATM bombing

While conducting investigations, officers allegedly came under fire from four suspects at the scene.

Residents of Lenasia South were jolted awake by loud explosions in the early hours of Tuesday, after an ATM at the BP Garage on Sheffield Road was bombed.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, no cash was stolen during the incident despite the damage caused by the explosion.

Cpt Sibeko said police officers responded to the scene after noticing tyres placed across the road near the petrol station. While conducting investigations, officers allegedly came under fire from four suspects at the scene.

“No police officers were injured during the exchange,” said Cpt Sibeko.

The suspects fled the area and, during their escape, allegedly opened fire on a man who was sitting in his vehicle.

Police have opened cases of attempted murder and ATM bombing. No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.

Police have appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to contact the Crime Stop line on 08600-10111 or submit information anonymously via the MySAPS App.
