Culpable homicide investigation underway after woman dies in taxi accident

The accident occurred at approximately 18:15 when a white Foton minibus taxi travelling southbound from the Lenasia Taxi Rank to Orange Farm overturned on Lenasia Drive, opposite the Ice Cream Factory.

A 54-year-old woman was killed in a taxi accident on Lenasia Drive, recently.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:15pm on Saturday, when a white Foton minibus taxi travelling southbound from the Lenasia Taxi Rank to Orange Farm overturned on Lenasia Drive, opposite the Ice Cream Factory.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, preliminary reports suggest that the driver of the Foton minibus was allegedly distracted or clipped by another vehicle travelling northbound with a trailer.

This secondary vehicle reportedly struck the right front fender of the minibus. In an attempt to avoid a further collision, the driver of the Foton swerved toward the western side of the road, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Emergency services responded to the scene and found several passengers requiring medical attention.
Fihla confirmed that the crash resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality.

The deceased, a 54-year-old woman, was declared dead at the scene. Her body was transported to the Diepkloof State Mortuary.

A male passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical attention. The driver and three other passengers – one male and two females – suffered minor injuries and were also transported to the clinic for treatment.

A culpable homicide case has been opened and is investigated by the Lenasia SAPS.

“We urge all motorists to remain vigilant and maintain a safe following distance, especially during evening hours. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time,” said Fihla.
