Robber jailed for 23 years after violent attack on pensioner

An identification parade was conducted, during which the complainant positively identified the accused.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the sentence of 23 years’ direct imprisonment imposed by the Port Shepstone Regional Court on Mpumelelo Tiger Shusha (45), who was found guilty of house break-in with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The offences were committed in Port Edward in November 2023, according to the regional spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

“Evidence before the court revealed that on November 24, 2023, a 75-year-old complainant was asleep at his home when Shusha and two accomplices unlawfully entered the premises. Armed with a bush knife and other weapons, they assaulted the complainant and robbed him of personal belongings valued at more than R38 000 before fleeing the scene,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

The matter was reported to the police, and following investigations, Shusha and his accomplices were arrested.

An identification parade was conducted, during which the complainant positively identified the accused. Some of the stolen items were subsequently recovered in their possession.

While Shusha pleaded guilty to the charges, his co-accused pleaded not guilty, resulting in a separation of trials.

“In aggravation of sentence, Prosecutor Nkululeko Saziso Dlamini submitted that the offences were serious and prevalent within the court’s jurisdiction. He also handed in a J88 medical report detailing the injuries sustained by the complainant during the attack,” added Ramkisson-Kara.

The court sentenced Shusha to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and eight years’ imprisonment for house break-in with intent to rob.

“The sentences were ordered to run consecutively, resulting in an effective sentence of 23 years’ direct imprisonment. Shusha was further declared unfit to possess a firearm. This sentence underscores the NPA’s unwavering commitment to ensuring accountability for violent offenders and securing justice for victims of crime,” Ramkisson-Kara concluded.
