A Newlands East netball coach is earning widespread praise after guiding two KwaZulu-Natal teams to outstanding success at the recent Interprovincial Tournament held in Centurion. Coach, Toni Joharie led the KZN Action Netball under-17A and under-17B teams through a demanding competition, with both squads advancing to their respective gold finals, an achievement that has placed the local mentor firmly in the spotlight.

The KZN under-17A team delivered a consistent and determined campaign, playing 11 matches en route to the final. Displaying grit and composure throughout the tournament, the team secured multiple victories in both pool and playoff stages.

They ultimately faced a formidable Western province side in the gold final, where they narrowly missed out on the top spot to claim a well-earned silver medal. The under-17B team matched that momentum with an impressive run of their own. After seven matches, they advanced to the gold final against Western Cape Coastals.

In a commanding performance, the KZN side secured a 28-23 victory to clinch the gold medal, capping off a memorable tournament. Joharie credited the success to months of preparation and teamwork.

“Taking two teams to their respective gold finals is no small feat. As a coach, this achievement is incredibly rewarding and speaks to the dedication, preparation and belief instilled in both squads over their six-month training period,” she said.

She added that balancing the demands of coaching two competitive teams was challenging but ultimately worthwhile.

“Managing the demands of two teams while maintaining performance levels is tough, but moments like these make it all worthwhile,” she stated. Joharie also praised team manager, Megan Sutton, for her role in the team’s success.

“Her unwavering support, commitment and passion for the game played a vital role. Having recently completed her Coaches Level 1 qualification, her drive and shared vision have been instrumental,” she said.

Reflecting on the tournament, Joharie said she was proud not only of the results but also of the players’ growth. “These experiences continue to shape them into not just better players, but stronger individuals,” Joharie shared.

The strong showing by both teams highlights the growing talent within KwaZulu-Natal’s netball ranks, with local coaches like Joharie playing a key role in developing the next generation of athletes.
