KZN Goalkeepers Academy uncovers young talent

The Football Talent Discovery Search, endorsed by SAFA KZN, SAFA eThekwini Region and the KZN Sports Confederation, attracted boys and girls from both northern and southern suburbs.

Aspiring young footballers from across KwaZulu-Natal converged at Curries Fountain Stadium during the Easter holidays for a successful talent identification event hosted by the KZN Goalkeepers Academy.

The Football Talent Discovery Search, endorsed by SAFA KZN, SAFA eThekwini Region and the KZN Sports Confederation, attracted boys and girls from both northern and southern suburbs.

Participants in the under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups showcased their abilities across all positions, including goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers, in what organisers described as a vibrant and inclusive environment.

Beyond identifying talent, the initiative forms part of the academy’s broader mission to uplift communities by engaging youth in structured sporting activities.

Organisers said programmes like these help steer young people away from social challenges such as substance abuse and crime, while promoting discipline and life skills.

The academy also aims to create pathways for promising players to access professional opportunities, including connections with PSL clubs and development structures.

The event was led by a technical team headed by former player and technical director, Sipho Zimba, alongside Ntokozo Bhengu, Siyabonga Zimba, Zanele Zungu, and manager, Seema Esterhuizen. Their combined expertise ensured that participants received both technical training and mentorship.

Organisers said the success of the Easter talent search highlights the growing importance of grassroots football development in the province. Training sessions continue weekly at Curries Fountain Stadium, as the academy works to nurture the next generation of football stars while making a meaningful impact in local communities.
