Metro Police bolstered by 13 new K9 handlers in crime-fighting drive
The new recruits completed four months of intensive training, bringing the total number of K9 Unit personnel to 20. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the Metro Police’s ability to respond to crime across the city.
The eThekwini Municipality has strengthened its crime-fighting capacity with the addition of 13 newly trained K9 handlers to the Durban Metro Police Unit.
The officers were officially introduced during a passing-out parade held near the Moses Mabhida Stadium, where they showcased their skills in detecting drugs, tracking suspects and combating illegal activities.

Deputy mayor and chairperson of the Community Safety and Security Committee, Zandile Myeni, described the K9 unit as a vital component of modern policing.
“As crime continues to challenge our communities, including drug trafficking, vehicle hijackings and violent crime, the deployment of specialised teams such as the K9 unit is essential,” she said. Metro Police commissioner, Sibonelo Mchunu, urged the new handlers to uphold integrity and accountability, reminding them of the public trust placed in their role. Head of College, Geraldine Stevens, also welcomed the officers, encouraging them to serve with discipline and professionalism.

The K9 unit plays a critical role in detecting drugs, explosives, and illegal firearms, as well as assisting in the tracking of suspects.
Officials say the unit acts as a force multiplier, improving operational efficiency and supporting broader law enforcement efforts. The newly trained teams are now set to be deployed across Durban, marking a significant step forward in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and build safer communities.
