Futuristic GAC Emkoo boasts bold design and strong value

Its sharp exterior lines, LED lighting signature, and concept-car character make it stand out instantly.

The GAC Emkoo arrives in South Africa as one of the most striking SUVs in its class, thanks to its bold angular design and futuristic styling. During my time with it, the Emkoo attracted plenty of attention from pedestrians and other motorists, and for good reason. Its sharp exterior lines, LED lighting signature, and concept-car character make it stand out instantly.

Inside, the cabin feels modern and well laid out, with a clean design and good-quality materials. The driving position is easy to adjust, visibility is solid, and the 10.1-inch touchscreen and 10-inch digital cluster are simple enough to operate. Space is one of the Emkoo’s strongest qualities: rear passengers enjoy generous legroom, and the boot is impressively practical for family use.

On the road, the 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine (130 kW/270 Nm) delivers a generally smooth and confident drive. There is a slight lag when you call on the engine for quick acceleration, said to be common with dual-clutch setups, but this is easy to get used to. Once moving, the Emkoo is comfortable and composed. Engine noise is noticeable, but never intrusive.

The technology package is competitive for its segment, with Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, and a strong JBL sound system. Android Auto works, although the connection can be finicky. Safety features are generous, but the lane-keeping assist can be overly aggressive, sometimes feeling like a tug-of-war with the steering wheel.

Overall, the GAC Emkoo offers standout looks, excellent interior space, good tech, and solid day-to-day comfort. Aside from a few quirks, it represents strong value and a compelling alternative for buyers seeking an SUV that doesn’t blend in.
