Metro Police crack down on road safety with vehicle checkpoints
Operations like these are crucial to ensure that motorists adhere to the law, that vehicles are properly licensed, and passengers are protected from unsafe driving practices.
To promote safety on the roads, the Metro Police conducted a vehicle checkpoint and a warrant roadblock along Bram Fischer Road, recently. The operation aimed to ensure passenger safety, verify the roadworthiness of vehicles, and identify motorists with outstanding fines.
According to the Metro Police’s Cpt Duke Matthews, the roadblock was highly effective in promoting road safety and compliance.

“Operations like these are crucial to ensure that motorists adhere to the law, that vehicles are properly licensed, and passengers are protected from unsafe driving practices,” he said.
He added that these proactive measures also help address the issue of unpaid traffic fines. During the two-hour operation, just over 100 vehicles were stopped and inspected. Officers arrested 12 drivers for outstanding fines, with the highest amount owed totalling R13, 500.

In addition, law enforcement issued charges to 12 vehicles for being unlicensed, seven drivers for not wearing seatbelts, while four drivers were found operating vehicles without a valid driver’s licence. Matthews highlighted the collaborative effort of the Metro Police team during the operation. He further encouraged the public to regularly check the status of their vehicle documents and traffic fines to avoid penalties.
“Ensuring that your vehicle is roadworthy, licensed, and that you have a valid driver’s licence not only keeps you on the right side of the law but also protects lives on the roads,” he said. Similar operations will be rolled out across the city to promote safety on the roads and to curb reckless driving.
