HEAL Kitchen reaches million meals milestone

The kitchen became a beacon of hope to those in desperate need of nourishment and dignity.

The HEAL Kitchen, an initiative of the Manav Seva Foundation, inspired by the vision of the HEAL Foundation, recently served its one-millionth meal, a symbol of compassion and community.

Born during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the HEAL initiative began humbly, preparing just 100 hot meals daily for frontline heroes.

But as hardship deepened and families across Durban faced food insecurity, the numbers grew. From 100 to 500 then 1, 000 meals a day!

The kitchen became a beacon of hope to those in desperate need of nourishment and dignity. Recognising the tireless efforts of its volunteers, the Manav Seva Foundation stepped in to scale the mission, building a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen to serve communities from the North to the South Coast of Durban.

The result: a dedicated team now prepares and distributes 1, 500 freshly cooked meals every day. Through a trusted network of 25 community partners, meals reach schools, shelters, and families in areas such as Stanger, Chatsworth, Inanda, and Amanzimtoti.

On the day of the millionth meal, HEAL volunteers returned to Bonela, one of the first communities served during the early days of the pandemic, to honour the milestone in the most meaningful way by sharing food, love, and gratitude.
