Suspect killed in high-speed chase and shootout with police

A high-speed chase and shootout with Erasmia police officers resulted in one suspect being killed and the recovery of chopped copper cables worth an estimated R60, 000.

On Thursday, January 16, at about 2:50am, police officers received a lookout for a suspicious vehicle, believed to be involved in criminal activities within the Brooklyn policing area. Acting on information, police officers commenced patrols along the R55.

Provincial police spokesperson, Cpt Johan Van Dyk, said, “While patrolling, officers identified the vehicle matching the description provided. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the suspects opened fire on the police. A high-speed chase ensued, with the vehicle heading towards the Mooiplaas Informal Settlement. During the pursuit, the suspects continued shooting at the officers, who retaliated.”

Police managed to immobilise the vehicle by shooting its tires. One of the bullets also struck a suspect through the boot of the vehicle. The injured suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Four other suspects fled the scene on foot and remains at large.

Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered three bags full of chopped copper cables, measuring 60 metres in length with an estimated street value of R60, 000.

“The vehicle was confiscated and forms part of the investigation to determine whether the vehicle was used in other criminal activities,” Col Van Dyk said. Later in the morning, an individual arrived at Pretoria-West police station claiming to be hijacked and he has since been taken in for further questioning.

Cases of attempted murder and tampering with essential infrastructure have been opened and are currently under investigation.
