As International Literacy Day is observed every year on September 8, Impala Crescent Primary School extended invitations to the community to show up and celebrate the day with their pupils.
The occasion was honoured to promote literacy in a world in transition, as the school promotes ‘reading with understanding’.
According to the school principal, Mr Adams, reading with understanding is the school’s focus. Civil society organisation, Action for Accountability, together with parents and even an artist, showed up with their books and read to the young leaders.
An activist media incubator for Action for Accountability, Busisiwe Jiyane, shared her experience while reading her poem to the pupils.

She said, “There is power and joy in reading- it takes you places and feeds your soul and brain. As a passionate activist, I firmly believe that reading is vital for everyone, and having the opportunity to celebrate Literacy Week with Impala Primary pupils by reading them a poem I wrote, brought so much joy to my heart as I learned that the young ones have the passion to read and seek knowledge. Their listening skills were excellent, and I urge all parents and teachers to continue motivating children to read and keep the spirit of Literacy Week alive.”
The teachers were welcoming as they gave the guests an undisturbed chance to bond with the pupils during the reading.
The pupils were lucky as one of the guests was artist, Gordon Jackson, from Woodwind Instruments, who played a flute for them after reading them a book. The event was wrapped up with light refreshments and a brief talk between the guests and the principal.
