Lawley informal settlement to be electrified

"After years on end struggling without electricity, Lawley residents are excited"

The electrification process of Lawley informal settlement finally began on July 1.

Prem Sookmungal, a community activist from the Lawley informal settlement, is happy and confident it is happening.

The commencement of the project was confirmed by Ward 8 councillor, Janice Ndarala.

Initially, the project was scheduled to begin in April 2014. However, due to various factors it was derailed.

After years on end struggling without electricity, Lawley residents are excited, Sookmungal said.

Over a month ago, a meeting was held with all stakeholders and Housing MMC, Dan Bovu to discuss a way forward regarding the informal settlement issue.

On June 16 another meeting was called by the Housing MMC where it was announced that the area would be electrified.

Sookmangul further revealed that the Public Protector’s office said they would form a monitoring team to see that the project is completed.
