17 motorists arrested for drunk driving

Several drivers who were under the influence were recently arrested.

An increase in reckless and negligent driving spurred on Metro and Brighton Beach SAPS to hold a roadblock in Solomon Mhlanga Road (Edwin Swales Drive) to curb road rules violations. During the roadblock, 17 people, aged from 24 to 60-years-old, were arrested on charges of drunken driving, last Saturday.

Brighton Beach SAPS management would also like to congratulate Detective Constable Thandiwe Mgcongo, who is the chief investigator for cases of drinking and driving within the Brighton Beach policing area. Within the last month, she ensured the conviction of seven drunken driving cases with fines ranging from a minimum of R5, 000 to a maximum of R 23, 000 being issued to offenders. Detective Cnst Mgcongo was congratulated on the convictions she attained.

Police would like to caution those who drive under the influence of alcohol or banned substances within the policing area that more operations are planned. “Remember that you are not only putting yourself and your passengers at risk of serious injury or death but also other road users. There is also no safe limit when it comes to drinking and driving,” said police spokesman, Cpt Louise Le Roux.

If you are intending to socialise and consume alcohol, rather appoint a designated drive or make use of a taxi/shuttle service rather than getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
