Drunk drivers receive harsh sentences

Several drivers who were under the influence were recently arrested in Brighton Beach.

Several arrests relating to driving under the influence or reckless driving were made during roadblocks in Brighton Beach vicinity, recently.

Detective Constable IT Mgcongo of the Brighton Beach Detective Services was commended following his investigations into the drunken driving offences that were committed over the last few months.

Sentences passed by the Durban Regional Court ranged from R20, 000 or 10 months imprisonment, and R17, 000 or eight months imprisonment to R13, 000 or six months imprisonments. The factors that were taken into account when sentencing, were previous convictions for the same offence by the perpetrator and the alcohol blood level that has been exceeded in accordance with the Road Traffic Act.

Police and other role-players such as Metro and RTI hold roadblocks on a continuous basis within the Brighton Beach policing area. The purpose of the operational activity is to address drunken and reckless driving by road users whose mode of transport does not conform to the standards as set out by the Road Traffic Act.

Police spokesman, Captain Le Roux said, “We would like to urge locals and visitors to our policing area to be responsible road users. Choose a designated driver if you have consumed alcohol. Remember, there is no safe limit.”
