Armed robbers captured for targeting e-hailing drivers
Investigations are progressing to link the suspects to similar offences. The men will appear in court later this week.
Five men, between the ages of 20 and 30, are in police custody, after they were apprehended by the Umlazi K9 Unit and eThekwini Inner and South clusters for allegedly robbing e-hailing drivers.
The unit and clusters were conducting an intelligence-driven operation to apprehend the wanted robbers.
This led to three men being arrested in Umlazi after police officers followed up on a hijacking reported in Lamontville on January 8, 2020.

The stolen vehicle was recovered and the men were taken to Umlazi SAPS for detention.
The men have been linked to numerous armed robbery, attempted murder and house robbery cases reported at the Umlazi police station.
Police officers continued with their operation which thereafter led them to the N2 southbound where a further two suspects were nabbed.
It is alleged that the suspects requested an e-hailing vehicle and attempted to rob the driver when they were overpowered by other e-hailing drivers.
The suspects were taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. They were positively linked to a carjacking case that was reported in Wentworth, last month.

Investigations are progressing to link the suspects to similar offences. The men will appear in court later this week.
Speaking of the successful arrests, KZN’s provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula, applauded the men in blue for their swift work.
