Wentworth SAPS warn of rise in motor vehicle thefts in Merewent
With regard to the modus operandi, the suspects are allegedly breaking door locks and tampering with ignitions to gain access to vehicles.
Wentworth SAPS have raised concerns about a spike in motor vehicle thefts and thefts from motor vehicles in the Merewent area over the past week.
According to police, several cases have been reported to Wentworth SAPS, with incidents occurring at different times and days.
In one case, a vehicle was stolen after the owner parked in a business area. In other incidents, suspects targeted vehicles parked inside residential premises.

Police say offenders broke door locks, forced electronic gates off their rails, and stole vehicles or items from inside them.
Police say light motor vehicles, including VW Polos and Toyota Cross models, appear to be the main targets. The thefts were reported between 1:30pm and 3pm, and during the evening and early morning hours between 9:30pm and 7am, and 9pm and 6am, when most residents were asleep.

Crime prevention tips from the SAPS:
- Always activate your alarm even when parking inside locked gates.
- Ensure your premises are well lit at night and check that CCTV cameras are working.
- Do not park vehicles on the street.
- Park inside the premises, even if only for a few minutes.
- In business areas: Double-check that vehicle doors are properly locked before leaving.
- Do not leave valuables visible such as cellphones, laptops, cameras or bags on car seats.
- Avoid parking on pavements or grass verges for long periods.
- Notify your security company to conduct patrols if vehicles are left unattended or you will be away.
Captain MP Gumede, the communications officer at Wentworth SAPS, urged residents to report any suspicious vehicles driving recklessly or aimlessly in the Merewent area.

“Crime affects all of us. It is important to report it to SAPS, security patrols, and Metro Police even if it does not directly affect you. Let us fight crime together,” he said.
