Fishermen urged to stay vigilant as vehicle thefts rise along Tongaat coastline

Police believe that criminals may be targeting vehicles left unattended for extended periods and are urging beachgoers to take precautionary measures to safeguard their property.

Tongaat SAPS has issued a warning to fishermen and fisherwomen following several incidents of motor vehicle theft reported at local beach areas.

According to Tongaat SAPS communications officer, Captain JV Naidoo, a number of cases have recently been opened after vehicles were allegedly stolen while their owners were fishing along the coastline.

Police believe that criminals may be targeting vehicles left unattended for extended periods and are urging beachgoers to take precautionary measures to safeguard their property.

Among the safety tips provided by the SAPS are avoiding parking in secluded areas, ensuring that vehicle doors are locked and windows are fully closed, and refraining from leaving valuables visible inside vehicles.

Fishermen are also advised to leave unnecessary valuables at home rather than storing them in their vehicles.

Cpt Naidoo further cautioned motorists against hiding spare keys underneath their vehicles, warning that suspects may be observing their actions.

As an additional security measure, vehicle owners are encouraged to remove the fuse or relay switch to make it more difficult for thieves to start and steal their vehicles.
