As part of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature’s ongoing community outreach and social responsibility initiatives, the deputy speaker, Honourable Mmabatho Tembe, recently visited two shelters for vulnerable mothers and children within the eThekwini Municipality, where blankets and dignity packs were donated to residents.
The outreach forms part of the legislature’s commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society and demonstrating that the people of KwaZulu-Natal remain at the centre of government programmes and interventions.
Both the Sahara Shelter and Strollers Shelter operate with limited resources while providing essential care, protection, and accommodation to women and children from diverse backgrounds.
The shelters support survivors of gender-based violence and domestic violence, as well as individuals facing homelessness.

Addressing residents at both shelters, the deputy speaker acknowledged the important role they play in providing safety, care, and hope to women and children during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
She emphasised that while donations alone cannot address every challenge these centres face, they help to ease some of the pressures brought about by limited resources.
The deputy speaker encouraged the women not to allow their current circumstances to define their future, emphasising that their backgrounds do not determine their future and that every woman deserves an opportunity to rebuild her life with dignity and hope.
