Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital unveils new High Care Unit

For patients and families in the surrounding community, the development strengthens the hospital’s ability to provide an important level of care closer to home.

Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital has unveiled its new 11-bed High Care Unit, marking an important milestone in the hospital’s continued investment in growing healthcare services for the Durban South community.

The new unit represents more than the addition of hospital beds – it reflects a meaningful investment in local healthcare capacity and has been designed to support patients who require closer clinical observation, enhanced monitoring, and specialised nursing care during their hospital journey.

For patients and families in the surrounding community, the development strengthens the hospital’s ability to provide an important level of care closer to home. The new High Care Unit will support a range of patients, including those recovering from surgery and those who may require a higher level of clinical support.

The milestone was celebrated during a special stakeholder event attended by hospital leadership, specialists, nursing teams, employees, contractors, partners and invited guests. The event recognised the collective effort behind the project and the role the new unit will play in supporting patient care at the hospital.

Hospital manager, Tanweer Ansari, described the project as one that goes beyond bricks, budgets and infrastructure.

“There are some projects that are measured in bricks and budgets. And then there are those that are measured in hope, purpose and the lives they will touch. This new High Care Unit reflects the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that the quality of care delivered inside the facility matches the standard of the environment created for patients, staff and doctors,” said Ansari.

The 11-bed unit will provide more depth to the already vast range of care provided by Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital.

He added that while the hospital is proud of the new space, the true measure of the project will be seen in the care, compassion and dignity experienced by every patient who enters the unit.

“This achievement belongs to so many people – our dedicated teams, clinicians, support services, leadership, contractors, community and partners who believed in the vision and worked tirelessly to bring it to life,” added Ansari.

The event followed the theme of, ‘Growing Care for Our Community’, symbolising Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital’s continued growth alongside the community it serves. As part of the occasion, guests received commemorative desk plants as a symbolic reminder of the hospital’s commitment to nurturing healthcare services for the future.

The new 11-bed High Care Unit has been thoughtfully designed to support a comfortable and dignified healing environment, while enabling clinical teams to provide closer monitoring and care to patients who require additional support.

The added capacity will also support the hospital’s surgical and specialist services, creating greater continuity of care for patients moving from theatre into recovery and onward through their hospital stay.

For the Durban South community, the development reinforces Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital’s role as a local healthcare provider committed to responding to the evolving needs of patients, doctors and families.

As healthcare needs continue to grow, Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital remains committed to growing with the community – providing care that is close, responsive and centred on the people it serves.
