Questions mount as family awaits answers after loved one’s death

Sandeep Uttam, 42, sustained critical injuries after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Flamingo Street and Rose Avenue on June 5.

Three weeks after a Lenasia man was struck by a vehicle while allegedly crossing the road on his way to work, his grieving family says they are still searching for answers and questioning the progress of the police investigation.

Sandeep Uttam, 42, sustained critical injuries after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Flamingo Street and Rose Avenue on June 5.

He was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator.

“We didn’t know about the incident. We were only informed a few hours later,” said his uncle, Ajeeth Singh.

According to relatives, doctors informed them that Uttam had suffered severe head injuries and that his chances of survival were slim.

He died the following day, June 6, What began as an incident allegedly described as minor by the driver, according to the family, ended in tragedy.

CCTV footage captured by a nearby property, which has since circulated widely on community social media groups, has intensified calls for accountability and a thorough investigation.

However, weeks after Uttam’s death, his family says they remain in the dark about the status of the case. The family alleges that while they continue to mourn the loss of a loved one, the driver involved has carried on with life as normal, with little visible progress in the investigation.

Their frustration has only deepened as time passes without answers. June 19, which should have marked Uttam’s 42nd birthday, instead became another painful reminder of the man they lost.

A well-known salesman at Mercedes-Benz in Lenasia, Uttam’s sudden death has left his family, friends, and colleagues devastated.

Now, his relatives are urging the South African Police Service (SAPS) to intensify its investigation and provide clarity on the circumstances that led to his death.

The family says they are not only seeking justice but also transparency from authorities tasked with investigating the fatal incident. As the weeks pass, they fear critical questions remain unanswered.
