Amabutho Akwazulu Musical announces world premiere at Durban Playhouse
The inspiration behind the production is to preserve and celebrate the story, heritage, and musical legacy of Amabutho Akwazulu through a world-class theatrical experience.
The first-ever musical dedicated to the story, spirit, and cultural legacy of Amabutho Akwazulu – the historic military system initiated by King Shaka during the 19th century that remains the cornerstone of Zulu culture and tradition to this day – will premiere at the iconic Durban Playhouse on October 17.
This landmark production – a powerful blend of music, movement, and dramatic storytelling – not only celebrates the richness of the Amabutho tradition through a bold theatrical interpretation but is designed to encapsulate the spirit of being a warrior for diverse local and international audiences.
One of the most ambitious projects brought to the stage by RYT Culture, a South African arts and classical music organisation founded and directed by Bongani Vilakazi, this mega production follows in the footsteps of world-renowned productions such as Ipi Thombi, The Lion King, King Kong (which told the tragic story of boxer, Ezekiel Dlamini and Calling Us Home.
For Vilakazi, it marks the coming of age of musical theatre in a province where the essence of the story originates.
“The inspiration behind the production is to preserve and celebrate the story, heritage, and musical legacy of Amabutho Akwazulu through a world-class theatrical experience. We believe this story is long overdue for the world stage, and the Durban Playhouse premiere is significant because it provides a prestigious platform for a production that celebrates KwaZulu-Natal culture while introducing it to a global audience,” he explains.

The musical is led by an experienced and visionary creative team comprising Vilakazi as well as Simphiwe Sikhakhane, Mhlonishwa Dlamini and a network of dedicated collaborators whose collective expertise shapes the artistic depth and production excellence of the work.
The music is, quite literally, the heartbeat of this production. Although the musical author is Bongani Vilakazi, the creative team engaged a wide variety of talented composers from around KwaZulu-Natal who were given the opportunity to contribute their original work and interpretations.
“Our intention is to ensure that the music represents the authentic sound, spirit, and identity of Amabutho Akwazulu, rather than creating something disconnected from its roots. We believe the story and music of Amabutho Akwazulu have long deserved a place on the world stage. This work is not only a celebration of heritage, but also a theatrical experience designed to speak to international audiences while remaining rooted in its cultural authenticity,” he explained.
Amabutho Akwazulu/ The Musical started with auditions held at the Durban Playhouse on February 13, 2026.
These attracted a wide range of talented performers, out of which a cast of more than 60 creatives was selected. This cast includes singers, dancers, and actors who will take to the stage between October 17 and 19.
In line with its global vision, selected international producers have been invited to attend the world premiere, creating pathways for potential future international runs and collaborations.
