Durban filmmaker honoured for showcasing city on global stage
Over a distinguished career spanning filmmaking, television production, education and industry development, Dr Eubulus has consistently used the power of storytelling to bring South African stories to international audiences while highlighting the unique appeal of Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.
Dr Timothy Eubulus, founder of Trinity Pictures, has been named Filmmaker of the Year at the fifth Durban Tourism Business Awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting Durban and KwaZulu-Natal through film and television productions.
The award celebrates filmmakers who create compelling visual content that positions Durban as a premier global destination by showcasing its people, culture, landscapes and visitor experiences.
Over a distinguished career spanning filmmaking, television production, education and industry development, Dr Eubulus has consistently used the power of storytelling to bring South African stories to international audiences while highlighting the unique appeal of Durban and KwaZulu-Natal.
Among his most notable achievements is the production of Othello, recognised as South Africa’s first feature film adaptation of a Shakespeare play. The pioneering production demonstrated his commitment to ambitious filmmaking and the advancement of local cinema.

Through Trinity Pictures, Dr Eubulus also produced the critically acclaimed Deep End, which won the prestigious Harley-Merrill Screenwriting Award in Hollywood.
The film further earned Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as a South African International Film Award for Best Screenplay.
His documentary, Vivaldi’s Spring in the Time of COVID-19, received the Best Artistic Picture Award at the eThekwini Film Awards and was selected for the Bokeh Film Awards.
The production was also nominated for the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards in the categories of Best Documentary Short and Best Use of KwaZulu-Natal as a Location.
Beyond his achievements behind the camera, Dr Eubulus has played an instrumental role in developing Durban’s film industry through mentorship, education and industry advocacy.
The Filmmaker of the Year Award acknowledges not only his creative excellence but also his ongoing contribution to showcasing Durban’s unique character and creative potential to audiences around the world.
