Winter dog drive: Temple extends warmth to strays

The initiative calls on the community to step forward with donations that will provide warmth and nourishment to abandoned pets and strays.

With winter settling in, the cold days and nights bring hardship not only to people but also to countless furry companions left vulnerable on the streets.

Recognising this urgent need, the Shree Emperumal Temple (Railway Barracks Temple) in Chatsworth has launched a winter dog drive.

The initiative calls on the community to step forward with donations that will provide warmth and nourishment to abandoned pets and strays.

Blankets will shield them from the biting cold. Food supplies will ensure they do not go hungry during the harsh season.

The temple requests donations of tinned dog food, kibbles, food bowls, blankets, or any other pet supplies. Contributions may be dropped off at the temple in Woodcrest Drive, Croftdene, and will be donated to KZN Dog House, a sanctuary in Queensburgh.

Temple publicist, Dr Dharshan Moodley, urged the public to spare a thought for the plight of hundreds of abandoned dogs.

“These dogs must forage for food. Unlike pets that are regularly fed by their owners, abandoned dogs scavenge for scraps, often consuming human leftovers, garbage, and whatever is available. They do not enjoy the comfort of a kennel or a warm fireside on biting cold nights or when it rains heavily. The winter dog drive is not only about material support but also about fostering a spirit of kindness and responsibility. Every wagging tail and grateful glance reminds us that humanity is measured by how we care for the most vulnerable,” said Dr Moodley.
