Young eco-champions celebrated at Merebank Earth Day event

Future environmental leaders from across South Durban took centre stage as the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) recently hosted an Earth Day programme for primary school pupils at the Merebank Community Centre.
Pupils from Nizam Road Primary, St Mary’s Primary in Merebank, as well as KwaThambo and Magama Primary Schools from KwaMakhuta gathered for a day focused on environmental awareness, creativity and action.
SDCEA thanked the participating schools for their enthusiasm, noting that the event aimed to inspire young minds to think critically about the future of the planet. The programme featured an educational session led by SDCEA’s Nomfundo Ntshangase, who unpacked the dangers of oil and gas exploration, particularly its impact on ocean ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.

Pupils were then encouraged to express their ideas creatively by drawing their vision for a healthier Earth. An interactive talk by UNI energy and youth project officer, Tristan Meek, followed, exploring the significance of Earth Day, South Africa’s current energy landscape, and the role renewable energy can play in protecting the environment.
The event concluded on a vibrant note, with pupils presenting songs, poetry and artwork that reflected their environmental concerns and hopes for the future.
As part of the initiative, SDCEA donated flower seedlings and certificates to each school, symbolising growth and continued commitment to environmental stewardship. Organisers said the event underscored the importance of empowering young people to take an active role in sustainability, adding that collective action remains key to protecting the planet for generations to come.
