Grandmother found strangled to death in Merebank home
Wentworth police confirmed an investigation into the murder.
An 82-year-old pensioner was found dead at her Merebank home on Monday afternoon, leaving her family shattered and heartbroken. Pensioner, Indrawathy Rampersadh, was allegedly strangled to death, according to her son, Kishan Bridgelal, who is the principal of Merebank Secondary.
He revealed that he and his 38-year-old son discovered their loved one’s lifeless body on the bedroom floor.

“A lady came to the house on the pretext of begging but had taken my mother’s life by strangling her. The woman escaped through the back door,” he claimed, expressing his suspicion of foul play.
The family has been left reeling following the tragedy and has confirmed that police investigations are underway. The motive behind the killing is still unclear, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“Her brutal killing has left us in shock and sadness. Right now, the police are handling the investigation, and we will co-operate with them in all ways possible. We want justice for my mum – she did not deserve to die in such a cruel manner,” he added.
The distraught son described his mother as the backbone of the family, holding everything together after his father’s passing. “For many years, she was sick, and despite her pain, she always opened her arms to the family and the community. My mum was an excellent cook, and we enjoyed our last meal with her on Sunday. She prepared a delicious cabbage and mutton,” he recalled.

According to family and friends, Rampersadh treated everyone who came to her door with affection, kindness, and a caring attitude. She was loved by everyone and did whatever she could to keep the family together.
Wentworth police confirmed an investigation into the murder. “When police arrived at the home, they found an elderly woman motionless and lying on the bedroom floor. Wentworth SAPS detectives are appealing to anyone with information who might have seen an unknown female suspect dressed in a floral skirt and light in colour, to assist them by calling the police station on 031 451-6207. Information will be treated in the strictest confidence,” said a statement issued by Wentworth SAPS.
