Illegal dumping continues to plague Lenasia

The blame has been directed at workers from a nearby shop, but the shop owner has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that they properly dispose of waste at the Pikitup disposal site on Bangalore Drive in Extension 11A.

Despite ongoing efforts to educate residents through an illegal dumping awareness campaign, the community of Lenasia continues to face rampant illegal dumping in open spaces and corners.

One concerned resident, who regularly walks in Extension 7, highlighted a particular area behind a church on Protea Avenue that has become a dumping ground for hazardous waste, including fire ashes, broken tiles, and trimmed tree branches. This resident expressed concern that illegal dumping not only degrades the environment but also diminishes the dignity of Lenasia.

Unfortunately, this location is not the only area being used for illegal dumping. Many spots throughout Lenasia, including its informal settlements, are affected. However, Pikitup maintains a list of problem areas.

To address this issue, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any instances of illegal dumping to Pikitup or the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

During the awareness campaign on September 4, Phindile Maphanaga from the City’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department stressed the importance of gathering evidence, such as photographs and vehicle licence plates, to ensure that action is taken against offenders. She also noted that ‘a crime doesn’t rot away’, and reported cases will eventually be resolved.

To report illegal dumping, contact Pikitup on 011 688-1500 or email [email protected].
