Rainhill Close residents speak out against sewage leak

Families living opposite the river embankment say the situation has made their lives miserable.

Residents of Rainhill Close in Rainham say they are at their wits’ end over a sewage leak that has plagued their community for years, seeping into a small river opposite their homes and creating what they describe as unbearable living conditions.

According to residents, the leak originates from a manhole along Rainham Drive and has turned into a persistent nuisance, bringing with it foul odours, swarms of mosquitoes, and infestations of rats.

Local activist, Joshua Christopher Chetty, has also stepped in to support the community, raising alarm over the potential health hazards. He warned that contaminated water could spread waterborne diseases such as cholera if left unchecked.

Chetty has called on the eThekwini Municipality to urgently test the water and repair the faulty manhole before residents’ health is put further at risk.

Beyond the sewage issue, residents criticised the general neglect of the riverbank, which is overrun with long grass and dense bushes.

They argued that the overgrowth not only spoils the area’s appearance but also provides cover for criminals after dark, posing an additional safety threat. Community activist, Chaplain Shaun has been assisting residents in their efforts to resolve the matter.

Residents say they are desperate for swift action to restore dignity and safety to their neighbourhood. The eThekwini Municipality was approached for comment, but had not responded at the time of publication.
