South Durban Community Environmental Alliance cleans up historic Mandela Stone site
This event added significance in 2025, marking 30 years since Nelson Mandela’s 1995 visit to the area, where he met with the community regarding the environmental harm caused by the Engen Refinery.
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) commemorated Nelson Mandela Day by hosting a 67-minute community service event at the historic Nelson Mandela Stone in Wentworth, on Thursday.
This event added significance in 2025, marking 30 years since Nelson Mandela’s 1995 visit to the area, where he met with the community regarding the environmental harm caused by the Engen Refinery.

In tribute to Mandela’s legacy of justice, environmental awareness, and community upliftment, SDCEA led a clean-up of the Mandela Stone site. In the spirit of Madiba’s love for people – especially children – small gifts were shared with community members and passers-by during the event.
Desmond D’Sa, SDCEA co-ordinator, said, “We are not only celebrating Mandela Day but also remembering the day 30 years ago when Madiba stood with the people of South Durban against pollution and injustice. His presence here continues to inspire us to protect our communities and our environment.”
