WATCH: New school set to bring relief to overcrowded schools

Lehae, a rapidly growing area in the southwestern quadrant of the Golden Highway and R554 intersection, has long needed a secondary school. With a history dating back to 1998, when its housing development project was approved, Lehae has seen significant population growth. Despite the completion of 3, 127 RDP houses by 2007, the area has been limited to a single school, Lehae Primary School, also established in 2007.
As a result, pupils have had to travel outside their area for secondary education, leading to overcrowding in nearby schools. To address this issue, the Gauteng Department of Education has converted an open space on Springbuck Street in Phase 3 into a temporary school site.

The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that Lehae Secondary School is a newly registered public ordinary school in the province. According to GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona, the school is set to open on July 22, 2025, when schools reopen for Term 3. It is said to accommodate grade eight and grade nine pupils, in an effort to alleviate the school’s population density in surrounding areas.
While some residents were caught off guard by the sudden development, the establishment of Lehae Secondary School is expected to bring much-needed relief to the community.

Lehae Secondary School received the following confirmation from the department. “As the department, we can confirm that pupils will be drawn from neighbouring schools, Azara Secondary and Moses Maren Secondary, to alleviate pressure for both schools,” said Mabona.
Accordingly, grade eight and nine pupils from the above-mentioned schools will be accommodated due to the current number of mobile classrooms at the school. However, admission will open for grade eight when online admission for 2026 opens on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Mabona added that applications will also commence on Thursday, July 24, 2025, for all interested pupils, for grades nine and 10.
